Bellator 215: Mitrione vs Kharitonov

Bellator 215 is scheduled to have 13 fights on the night. Fans can watch this event on Paramount Network and DAZN. The preliminary fights will begin at 6:30 PM ET and the main card will begin at 9 PM ET. The main event of the night is a heavyweight bout between two fighters looking to get one step closer to a heavyweight title shot.

Matt Mitrione (-120) vs Sergei Kharitonov (+100)

When we last saw Matt Mitrione (-120), he was in the Heavyweight Grand Prix Tournament and suffered a Unanimous Decision loss to the eventual winner and current “champ-champ” Ryan Bader. Prior to that, Mitrione had won four straight fights since jumping from UFC to Bellator in June 2016. He even scored victories over Fedor Emelianenko and Roy Nelson.

Sergei Kharitonov (+100) has gone unbeaten in his last six fights, although he did get a NC in May of last year. His last loss came against Javy Ayala back in November 2016. Kharitonov has done most of his damage in other promotions like M-1 and RCC. He has a reputation for his work over a decade ago in Pride and Strikeforce. Unfortunately, Sergei isn’t the same fighter as he was then. In fact, he’s shown a distinct decline inside the cage despite winning his last fight against Roy Nelson last October.

For me, Kharitonov is just not a great fighter anymore. He’s more of a name than a legitimate contender in the heavyweight division. With that said, he does provide a tough matchup for Mitrione. Sergei has the striking skills to win a standup fight against Mitrione. He also has the clinch skills to beat up “Meathead.” And, his ground game is at least as good as his opponent’s.

With that said, Sergei is going to have to catch Mitrione cleanly to really change the landscape of this fight. And, I don’t see it happening. Matt has shown a surprising amount of athleticism for being such a big man. He also hits like a Mack truck. I think Mitrione can turn this fight into an ugly battle and win it either via ground and pound or out-slugging Kharitonov.

I really like Mitrione’s betting value here. At -120 odds, there’s still the potential of a great return. I’m taking Meathead to win via TKO in the 3rd Round.

Bellator 216: MVP vs Paul Daley

Bellator 216 will take place on Saturday night, and it also features 13 fights. The prelims are set to begin at 7:30 PM ET, with the main card beginning at 10 PM ET and will air exclusively on DAZN. Between the two Bellator events, Bellator 216: MVP vs Paul Daley has the more exciting main card with the following matchups:

Erik Silva (+210) vs Yaroslav Amosov (-270)

FighterErik SilvaYaroslav Amosov

Erik Silva is making his Bellator debut on Saturday night after a 6+ year run in the UFC where he fought 16 times and went 7-8 with 1 no contest. Silva dropped four of his last five UFC fights before being showed the door. He had a pit stop in the LFA for a win before coming over to Bellator. 13 of Silva’s 20 victories have come via submission. Silva looks at his opportunity with Bellator to be a new chapter in his career and a fresh start.

Yaroslav Amosov turned pro roughly 6 ½ years ago and has won all 20 of his professional fights. He largely fought in Russia before making his Bellator debut last July when he won via Unanimous Decision over Harris. Amosov has a great arsenal in his fight game including knockout power and submission skills.

This fight is all about the young, hot prospect going up against the crafty veteran. It’s a spot that Silva was once in as well, back in 2011. Silva’s experience could be a huge factor in this contest. Amosov has the offensive skills to out-strike Silva and stop him within the fight distance. But, does he have the defensive skills to withstand Silva’s attacks?

I believe that Silva (+210) offers betting value as he has a decent chance of pulling off the upset, which also makes him worthy of a flier. With that said, I’m going with the 25-year old Amosov to remain undefeated and rise up Bellator’s ranks. He might not be in the Welterweight Grand Prix, but he could be a contender down the line once the tournament is over.

Bellator 217 betting odds

Roy Nelson (+170) vs Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (-215)

FighterRoy NelsonMirko ‘Cro Cop’

This is a rematch from October 2011 when Roy Nelson defeated Cro Cop via 3rd Round TKO at UFC 137. It was a solid win for Nelson who was still trying to climb up the UFC heavyweight division at the time. Nowadays, the 42-year old Roy “Big Country” Nelson is more of a name that helps bring recognition to a fledgling heavyweight division than actually contending for the title. But, don’t tell that to Roy because he believes a win over Cro Cop could put him closer to a Bellator title fight.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic is two years older than Nelson and has won nine straight fights, which spanned across three different MMA promotions. Mirko has spent the last 2 ½ years fighting at Rizin and looks in the best shape of his life for this bout against Roy.

So, Cro Cop 'passed multiple drug tests' for his fight with Roy Nelson this weekend?

Sure, Jan. pic.twitter.com/hpMp3MneVf

— JustBleedMMA (@JustBleedMMA) February 12, 2019

Nelson comes into this bout having lost two straight fights and three of his last four. He joined Bellator in 2017, but has gone 1-2 and appears to be well past his prime. Kharitonov defeated Nelson in the 1st Round of their fight last October, and I expect Cro Cop to come close to this result. Mirko is 6-0 in his previous six rematch fights, and I expect him to improve that mark to 7-0.

Cheick Kongo (+345) vs Vitaly Minakov (-470)

This heavyweight fight is also a rematch as these two men squared off at Bellator 115 in April 2014. Minakov won that contest via Unanimous Decision and looks to duplicate his success nearly five years later. Since their first fight, Cheick Kongo has gone 9-1, including winning seven straight fights. The 43-year-old fighter appears to still be a tough out in the division. His last two fights have ended in KO victories.

Vitaly Minakov has had a strange relationship with Bellator. Minakov first fought for the company in 2013 and 2014. He won four fights including the Heavyweight title. However, he and the promotion had difficulties with the contract negotiations and Vitaly bounced. He never lost the belt.

Minakov fought seven times in other promotions before Bellator could convince him to come back. With a win in this fight, I’m willing to bet that Minakov becomes Bader’s next opponent. That, or he will fight the winner of Mitrione vs Kharitonov and then take on Ryan Bader. I don’t see the Nelson vs Cro Cop winner being near the front of the line for a title shot.

Either way you look at it, a victory over Kongo will earn the former heavyweight champ, who never lost the belt, another chance to reclaim what is rightfully his.

For this fight, Minakov will dominate the elder Kongo and win. The only question is whether or not this bout will finish within the distance or go to the scorecards.

MVP (-215) vs Paul Daley (+170)

The main event of the night is also an opening round fight in the Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix. The winner will move on to the semi-finals and take on Douglas Lima who defeated Andrey Koreshkov at Bellator 206 last September.

Michael “Venom” Page, also known as MVP, comes into this bout undefeated and winning all eight of his fights under the Bellator banner. MVP is a showman inside the cage and has stopped eight of his 13 opponents via KO/TKO. Page will have a six-inch height advantage along with a reach advantage. However, he’s going up against an opponent who has similar punching power.

The reason that Paul Daley has been around so long is because the 35-year old has knockout power. 30 of his 40 wins have come via KO/TKO. Daley returned to Bellator in 2015 and has gone 4-3 during that span. However, his three losses have come against three other guys in this tournament. So, he’s definitely still a threat in the welterweight division. Daley last fought in May 2018 and lost via UD to Jon Fitch.

Keep in mind, this isn’t just a Grand Prix tournament fight, but it’s also one of Bellator’s biggest grudge matches as neither fighter likes the other. Both British fighters have talked trash about each other in the media over the last few years.

@Michaelpage247 and @Semtex_170 face-off for the first time… sorta.

It all goes down Saturday night on DAZN https://t.co/j4BIUfmyffpic.twitter.com/t3ZBlcMneu

One way or the other, this fight is going to end via KO. Both fighters will slug it out and look to knock their opponent’s head off. This is going to be an explosive encounter. Daley definitely has more than a puncher’s chance to win this fight, which means he offers great betting value at +170 odds. But, the smart money is on MVP in this bout. The younger, brash fighter is going to get his signature win and advance in the Grand Prix.

✊@MichaelPage247 has the infinity stones, but will they be enough to defeat @Semtex_170 at #Bellator216?

Final Thoughts on Bellator’s Fight Weekend

Bellator 217 Betting Odds Ufc

Bellator is airing over two dozen fights in a stacked weekend of sports action. Bellator 215 has some intrigue, but the fireworks are with Bellator 216 on Saturday night. Ironically, this event features three fighters over the age of 40 on the Main Card. Personally, I find that comical. However, it does have enough recognizable names to draw a lot of interest.

I’m pumped up for the MVP vs Daley fight as these two guys are going to smash each other. I’m also looking forward to the return of Vitaly Minakov. I believe he’s going to establish himself as the top heavyweight contender after he destroys Kongo. The Nelson vs Crop Cop fight should also end in a knockout. And Silva vs Amosov also provides a lot of intrigue.

I wish Bellator didn’t have two events this weekend, and only did one. But, it still is going to be an exciting two days of MMA action.
